All systems require a risk assessment, however not all systems will require elaborate control measures.ACoP L8 recommends that shower heads are cleaned quarterly or more frequently if recommended in the legionella risk assessment.Shower heads and associated hoses should be removed where possible, de-scaled and disinfected in a suitable shower cleaning solution. Shower Hose lengths should not be overly long as to allow them to reach other sanitary systems, allowing them to submerge into the water within that system and potentially backflow into the domestic water system This task can be carried out in house by someone who is competent to do so or by an outside contractor like ourselves. At Spartan Environmental we can include this work as part of a monitoring regime or as a standalone quarterly visit.Scale acts as a nutrient feeding the bacteria as well as restricting the flow of water these elements together create an environment that could be conducive to Legionella bacterial growth.  Bacteria, mould, and mildew can thrive in moist environments like shower hoses and heads. Regular disinfection using a bleach solution or specialised disinfectant helps to kill these harmful microbes and prevent the growth of new ones.As a result, maintaining a clean and hygienic shower system is essential for your health.
Regular cleaning, descaling, and disinfection are key components of ACoP compliance and play a critical role in protecting public health.By taking the necessary steps to properly maintain shower heads and hoses, building owners, duty holders and managers can ensure the safety of their water systems and avoid the risk of Legionnaires' disease.Emergency showers are generally infrequently used. Emergency showers which are infrequently used are prone to stagnation. All infrequently used Showers should be flushed through and purged to a drain ensuring three-five times the volume of water in the stagnant zone is drawn off. The frequency of such flushing should be at least weekly.
